  CHAPTER ONE

“Are you really going to tell him?” Melanie asked. She was gaping at Kyra across the table. The lifelong friends were enjoying happy hour drinks at a trendy bar and were lucky to have found the high, round table in the crowd. It probably did not hurt that the women were both attractive. Two guys in their late twenties, just a few years younger than Melanie and Kyra, had offered up their table when they first saw the women come into the bar. But the guys spotted the ladies’ wedding rings, so after buying them a round, they’d moved on.

“I think I have to. The guilt is killing me,” Kyra replied. She was making quick work of her second glass of wine.

“But is that any reason to tell Ethan? I mean, if assuaging your guilt is the only reason you want to tell him, is it worth it? All you’re going to do is make him miserable. Maybe even ruin your marriage.”

“Well, the marriage isn’t perfect now, is it? I almost cheated on my husband,” Kyra replied. She finished her wine and went to the bar to fetch another round.

Melanie was not sure which shocked her more, that Kyra had come so close to cheating on her husband of thirteen years, or that even she might still destroy everything by telling him. Okay, technically Kyra did cheat by most people’s definition. She had been fooling around with Bill, her co-worker, but she had stopped short of actual sex. Kyra avoided specifics on just how far she’d gone. Still, Melanie could not believe her friend had done anything at all.

The women had known each other since middle school and while Kyra had as much of a wild side as anyone, she was never destructive the way some of their friends were. Kyra had never crossed that line. She always did the right thing, and her marriage to Ethan seemed perfect from the outside. They met in college and married two years after graduation. Two kids, a son and daughter, followed in the first few years, then Kyra resumed her career without missing a beat. But the truth was that Kyra’s marriage was anything but perfect. Kyra wondered why she’d sought refuge in a workplace romance. Things had not been right with Ethan for a long time, and when Bill started flirting with her, she could not resist. In the beginning, she thought it was all just an innocent office flirtation. He would compliment her on how nice she looked and say things like, “It’s a shame we’re both married.”

Since her sex life with Ethan had become so limp, it was nice to know she was still desirable. Kyra had always turned heads. She was not gorgeous, she believed, and had never considered herself sexy. Hers was more of the girl-next-door look. With her almost white-blond hair and porcelain skin, almost everyone told Kyra how cute she was. Since the kids came along, she’d worn it in a short bob, even though she knew her husband preferred it longer. It was just easier to manage this way in her limited time. She was not tall, just under five-and-a-half feet, but she had a nice curvy figure all through high school and college that kept the boys coming. But the two pregnancies had taken their toll. Those last twenty pounds just wouldn’t come off, and sometimes she wondered if Ethan just didn’t find her attractive any longer.

When Bill’s advances went past simple flirting to suggestive IMs and emails, Kyra did not encourage him, but she also did not tell him to stop. He grew more brazen over time and she had to admit, some of what he wrote got her hot. She’d go home to Ethan all fired up, but he’d rebuff her advances, or they would just have their perfunctory sex. That was when she began to send some provocative emails of her own. Melanie was right. Kyra always did the right thing, which was why it felt so naughty and so good to play around with Bill.

Kyra returned with their drinks and Melanie asked, “So what are you going to tell him?”

“I think Ethan knows something was going on.”

“Aha! I didn’t think this was just simple guilt.”

“I do feel guilty, Mel. And I could be wrong, but Ethan’s been acting weird lately. Whenever he looks at me, it just feels like he knows something.”

  “So?”

“So, I’m going to tell him that I became close to another man, but that nothing really happened.”

“Then you’re not coming totally clean?”

“Well, I don’t think he needs the gory details, does he?”

Kyra wasn’t ready to tell the whole truth because that would mean admitting that she had strayed, and she did not want to end her marriage. Whatever problems they had, she stilled loved Ethan and thought their marriage could be saved. But she didn’t know how he would feel if he knew everything. If Ethan had done what she did, Kyra didn’t know if she could forgive so easily.

The naughty fun crossed the line when Bill asked if she wanted to have drinks after work. Deep down, she knew she really shouldn’t, that it would probably lead to trouble, but she convinced herself that since they were both married nothing would happen. She assumed Bill wouldn’t break his vows either. She called Ethan and told him she had to work late and asked him to pick up the kids from daycare. That was the first real lie she told her husband.

After a couple hours and enough drinks to leave her feeling buzz
y and free, Kyra was pressed against the cool stucco wall outside of the pub, battling Bill’s tongue with her own.

Inside, he’d been charming and their banter had been flirtier than ever. Bill confessed that he’d always had the fantasy of sneaking off for a quickie in the restroom of a bar just like that one, but he’d never been with a woman adventurous enough to try it. Kyra admitted the idea was sexy, but she couldn’t see herself doing something like that. Maybe when I was younger, if I were drunk enough, but not now, she thought. She reminded herself that she was a married woman, and a mother to boot!

But as the liquor flowed, Bill moved on from just touching her hand here and there to rubbing her arm and touching her back. She allowed it because she liked the way Bill saw her, as the kind of woman who might sneak off to the restroom with him. And he was an attractive enough man. He was a handful of years older and about average height, with a body that hadn’t gone completely to seed yet. His dark hair had thinned and gone gray just enough to be distinguished. When he leaned over and kissed her, she did not know what to think. When it was more than just a peck, she responded without thinking and nodded dumbly when Bill asked if she was ready to go.

As they left the pub, Kyra’s rational mind warred with the fiery sensations working through her body. The kiss had been nice. God, she couldn’t even remember the last time she’d kissed anyone like that besides her husband. She wouldn’t mind being kissed again. No, she told herself. You can’t do that. You need to tell Bill goodnight and get out of here! She fully intended to do that as he walked her to her minivan, but when they stopped in front of it, they did not say goodnight. He kissed her and pulled her into his arms. When she opened her mouth to his, he turned so that Kyra was pressed against the wall. She was caught in the moment. The part of her brain that screamed for her to get out of there was silenced. Instead, she held Bill tight and kissed him with a ferocity that had been building up for months.

The sun had just set and the parking lot was empty enough that no one bothered them as they made out like horny high-schoolers. She was wearing a light jacket over her peach sweater and he slipped his hand inside it, cupping her breast. He probably couldn’t feel much through her sweater and lightly padded bra, but she felt something. Her body responded to his touch. It was hot to be illicitly groped like that right there in the parking lot. Bill pulled his lips from hers and sucked hard enough on her neck for Kyra to whisper, “Be careful.” The last thing she needed was for him to leave a mark! He did have nice lips and his kisses on her neck made her yearn for more. Her pulse was pounding and she was getting damp down below. It didn’t help that drinking had always made her an easy mark.

Going back to college, Kyra always got frisky when she’d had too much to drink. She was in that state when she first met Ethan, and let him drag her back to his off-campus apartment. She had left him satisfied that first night, but she was also impressed that he didn’t try to sleep with her. He might have been successful if he’d tried.

Bill tried slipping his hand under her sweater and that’s when she brought things to a halt. If they hadn’t been standing out in public, maybe she wouldn’t have had the willpower, but she was not going to go any further in public. “Bill, don’t,” she’d breathed, putting her hand over his. He made another half-hearted attempt, then stopped.

“Sorry,” he said. “I don’t know what came over me.” Kyra knew exactly what came over him, because she was feeling the same way, but one of them had to assert their sanity.

“It’s okay,” she said, kissing him. They said an awkward goodbye, then she sat in the minivan for another twenty minutes before she felt like she could drive. She hoped breath mints hid the alcohol on her breath and went straight upstairs when she got home, telling Ethan she did not feel well.

Kyra could have just chalked it up to drunken foolishness if things had ended there, but their make-out session only seemed to inflame Bill, and his advances became stronger. Something had been touched inside her as well and, to her shame, she encouraged his advances even more. The next day he sent her an email:

  Kyra,

Last night was amazing. You have no idea how much I wanted to pull you into the back seat and take you. I could tell you wanted it to by your kisses. Touching you like that was even better than I imagined. I couldn’t take my mind off you all night. I couldn’t stop thinking about what it would be like to touch you without clothes in the way, to kiss your soft skin everywhere. I don’t think I can look at you now without imagining how you’d look in the heat of passion! Don’t try to tell me you’re not feeling it too! I can’t wait to do it again.

  Bill

When she read that email, and a strong need and dread surged through her simultaneously. Obviously this was no longer an innocent office flirtation. Despite the fact she was playing with fire, Kyra could not help herself and replied to the email, telling Bill that she had been thinking about him as well and wondering what it would be like to have him inside her. It was an incredible thrill for someone who never did the wrong thing. She kept their relationship at erotically charged emails for the next several weeks, although she did start dressing differently for work, wearing tops that would show off her breasts, which she considered her best asset. She was lucky they stayed perky after her pregnancies, and even grew a little, although she did not need the help. She had been a solid C-cup since she was a freshman in high school. She’d always had a nice, round ass too, although these days she wished it were a little smaller. Her flirtation with Bill actually got her to drag out her old exercise videos and started working again to get in the shape she truly wanted to be in.

“Are you still with me?” Melanie asked. Kyra was so caught up in reliving her misdeeds that she forgot her friend was even talking.

“Sorry, I was lost for a second there.”

“You looked like you were a million miles away. You’re right, I don’t think Ethan needs all the details, but if you’re going to confess, you need to make sure you tell him enough that it qualifies as the truth. If more comes out later, or he finds out some other way, it will be worse.”

“You’re right. Don’t worry, I still love Ethan and I will do whatever it takes to make sure my marriage is whole.”

“Be careful when you say anything. Ethan could come up with some crazy punishment.”

“Ethan would never hurt me, even though I’ve hurt him. He’s just not vindictive,” Kyra said, looking at her watch. “Wow, we’ve been here way too long.”

Melanie checked the time on her cell phone. “I told Jack I would be home a half hour ago!”

The women quickly finished their drinks and grabbed their things. As Kyra worked her minivan into traffic, she thought about exactly what she was going to tell her husband. She resolved to do it tonight, before she lost her nerve. If Melanie knew everything that had happened, Kyra was sure her friend would never counsel her to tell Ethan everything.

Melanie only knew about everything that led to the kissing outside the pub. The truth was that Bill had lured her out once more, and that time things got out of hand.

After weeks of pleading from Bill, Kyra finally relented and agreed to go to lunch with him. It was just the Thursday before. He drove and she didn’t realize they weren’t heading toward a restaurant until he turned in to the parking lot of the Sheridan near the airport. She sat with her hands clasped in her lap and would not look at him. Finally, he said, “Kyra.”

“Bill, what are we doing here?”

  “Isn’t that obvious?”

“But we shouldn’t. We never talked about this.”

“I know, but I thought if we did, you would get scared and turn me down flat. I know you want this, Kyra. You’re just afraid.” He took her hand.

“For good reason. We’re both married, Bill. We both have kids.”

“And no one will ever know about this. I know you’re not happy. I haven’t made love to Julie in months. This is just for us, Kyra.”

  “Bill, I don’t know.”<

Before she could say anymore, he pulled her into a hot kiss and she did not hesitate this time. She responded wholeheartedly. Honestly, just sitting in the parking lot and considering going up to a hotel room with Bill had her heart pounding. Deep down, underneath the girl who always did the right thing, was a bad girl dying to break out. She was a girl who had sexual fantasies full of danger and forbidden excitement, of things she could never tell her husband. It was that girl that kept kissing Bill, then told him to park the car.

Bill already had a keycard, so they went straight through the lobby and up the elevator to the room, which held two double beds and a long, low dresser and a small sitting area with a loveseat and desk. The bathroom was larger than she expected and she locked herself in, telling him she wanted to freshen up. She checked her hair and make-up, but really she needed to steel herself. She wanted this, but fear gripped her stomach and she couldn’t decide if she should run from the room or go out there and tear Bill’s clothes off. It had been a long time since she had been the sexual aggressor. She came out of the bathroom and stood in the short corridor, halfway between the bedroom and the door and he called to her.

The room was unnaturally quiet and she bent over between the beds to turn on the clock radio on the nightstand. It was just another stalling tactic, but she didn’t know what else to do. She was waiting for him to make the first move. Kyra found an adult contemporary station and when she straightened up, Bill was standing behind her. He put one arm around her waist and handed her one of those tiny bottles of whiskey from the mini bar. It burned her throat, but she drank it down and felt its warmth spread through her chest. He was kissing the back of her neck and chills went down her spine. She closed her eyes, leaned into him and only released as he unbuttoned her shirt and she felt his warm hand on her stomach. She was self-conscious about the shape of her tummy these days, but Bill’s soft lips on her neck helped her put that out of her mind. When her fitted blouse was unbuttoned, he pulled it apart and caressed her from her stomach to just below her breasts. Kyra shivered every time his fingers brushed the cups of her lacy, ivory bra and she wished he would go higher. She was not wearing one of her plain, padded white bras, and she couldn’t help but wonder if she wanted something to happen when she'd dressed that morning.
